Screenings/Physicals

According to Massachusetts Law 105 CMR 200.000, the purpose of mandated health screenings is "to identify and take appropriate actions with respect to...enhance all children's ability to obtain the fullest benefit of their educational opportunities".

Health screenings are not meant to be diagnostic, but are tools that may indicate a need for medical follow up.

Vision and hearing screenings are intended to help identify children with common vision and hearing problems as early as possible, thus supporting educational achievement.

BMI (Body Mass Index) measurement is a key factor in tracking a student's overall health status for children, and is based on height, weight, gender and age.

Postural screening provides the opportunity for early detection, regular monitoring and treatment of spinal abnormalities during the period of rapid growth in adolescence.

The following health screenings are state mandated in Massachusetts Schools. The following lists the Marblehead Schools screening intervals

BMI
• Grades 1, 4, 7, 10

Vision
• Grades: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10

Hearing
• Grades: K, 1, 2, 3, 7, 10

Postural/ Scoliosis
• Grades: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

Parents who do not wish their child to have an in school screening must submit a written request to the school nurse. The school nurse will notify the family for any child whose screening results require medical follow up.
