Marblehead High School- Senior Project 2010
The goal of the senior internship program is to allow students to have a voice in their own education by pursuing an independent study of their own design and focusing on an area of personal interest. The projects pursue one of four paths: career exploration, artistic expression, community service, or academic research. The senior internship program encourages students to develop mentor relationships, acquire new skills, and experience the opportunity of education outside the traditional academic climate of the High School. It is an excellent opportunity to prepare the students for college, the workplace, a special interest, or community service. The program is open to students in good academic standing.
The Senior Project/Internship runs from April 26th – June 3rd and has three phases:
- On-site internship with a supervisor from April 26th – June 2nd - The students are expected to be working during normal business hours or approximately 30 hours per week. This is a 5 week internship following spring break.
- The students are expected to write an English paper on the experience, due on May 26th, and receive a grade for their English requirement.
- The students will give a presentation of their internship on June 3rd from 3:00 – 5:00 at the Marblehead High School. They will earn 2.5 credits.
Each student is assigned a site supervisor and a mentor.
The student will report to a supervisor at their internship. The site supervisor provides the structure for the internship and should be experienced in the field of study. He/she will report on the student’s dependability, general performance, independence, and accomplishment for their internship. The supervisor may not be a parent, and the internship is unpaid.
An internship may involve working in an area such as: Community Service, Business, Retail, Government, Trades, Medical, Education, or Arts.
The mentor’s role is to supervise the progress of the internship and to help the student with any issues or concerns regarding the project. The students will contact their mentors 3 times. The mentors serve as guides and oversee the student’s progress in completing their project, journal, and essay. They do not need to be an expert in the student’s project. Students must choose a teacher as a mentor.
